Tax Preparation in Locust, NC
Personal and business returns prepared from the office on West Main Street.
What a Locust return usually looks like
Locust has grown on the Charlotte commuter fringe rather than around a large local employer. The city reports permits for 1,106 new single-family homes and 234 apartment units between 2013 and 2023, with the population rising from 4,543 to 5,854 in the three years to July 2023. Most working households here earn their wages somewhere else and come home to a house bought recently, which is why so many returns in this town turn on a first full year of mortgage interest and property tax and on whether adding up deductions finally beats the standard deduction.
Situations we see often here
- A household with two employers in two different counties, where the withholding was set by each job separately and neither one was set for the pair
- The first full tax year in a newly built home, where mortgage interest and property tax are worth adding up for the first time
- Trade contractors working the subdivisions — self-employment tax, vehicle and equipment write-offs, and quarterly payments set so the following April is not a surprise
- A return that reports both a W-2 job and side work, which is the most common shape of return this office prepares
- Households that moved into Locust partway through a year and owe a part-year return to two states
Business returns in Locust
The business returns here are mostly small: single-member LLCs that belong on the owner's personal return rather than on a separate one, and S-corporations and partnerships in the trades. The distinction matters more than owners expect, because a single-member LLC with no election files no separate federal return at all, and owners frequently arrive expecting one.
We prepare partnership, S-corporation and corporation returns, and the owners’ personal returns alongside them. Details and starting prices are on the business tax preparation page.
Worth knowing in Locust
The county line runs through Locust, and it is not a technicality. Cabarrus County's rate schedule lists the City of Locust alongside Concord, Kannapolis and Harrisburg, and at least one Locust subdivision on NC 24/27 East sits in Cabarrus. It does not change your state income tax, which is the same across North Carolina — but it decides which county bills your property tax, and for a business it decides which county office the annual listing goes to. Two houses a mile apart on the same street can answer to different tax offices.
General information about how these rules work, not advice about your return. Rates, limits and deadlines are set each year and change. We will tell you how any of this applies to you once we have seen your situation.
How this works from Locust
Our office is on West Main Street, so you are welcome to sit down with it in person, and everything can equally be done through the client portal if that suits you better.
We prepare federal and North Carolina returns, and returns for other states where your income reaches into them. Nothing is charged until the return is finished and we know what it costs. Please do not send tax documents by email — the client portal exists for exactly that reason.
