About the firm
Built for the people it serves
Returns and books for families and small businesses across the Carolinas.
Our mission
Helping you keep more of what you earn
Our mission is to help families and small businesses navigate the tax landscape and reduce the amount they pay in taxes, by applying sound tax strategy rather than simply filling in the forms.
The tax code is long, it changes every year, and almost none of it is written for the person it applies to. Most people overpay not because they are careless but because nobody ever showed them which provisions were theirs to use. Our job is to know that code well enough to put it to work for you, legally and thoroughly, and to make sure you understand what we did and why.
We take the same care with a straightforward return as with a complicated one. A family filing a single W-2 deserves the same attention to detail as a business with five entities, because the money at stake matters just as much to them.

The firm
An established practice under new ownership
The practice at 217 West Main Street has been preparing returns for this community for more than twenty years. Carolina Tax Service took it on and kept what was working: the same office, the same familiar faces at the counter, and client files that go back years so returning clients do not start from scratch.
What changed is how the work reaches you. Documents move through a secure client portal instead of email. Appointments are booked online. Returns are prepared in professional software, reviewed against current federal and state law, and e-filed. You can complete a return without setting foot in the office, or you can sit across the desk and go through it page by page. Both are equally welcome.
We prepare returns for clients in every town and county in North Carolina, with most of our work concentrated in Stanly, Cabarrus, Union, and Mecklenburg counties, which covers Albemarle, Concord, Monroe, and the Charlotte area. We serve South Carolina as well, and prepare returns for clients in most other states.
Who we work with
Most of our clients are individuals, families, and owner-operated businesses. If your situation is on this list, it is work we do every week.
- Working families and individuals with W-2 income
- Self-employed people, contractors, and single-member LLCs
- Partnerships, S-corporations, and C-corporations
- Landlords and investors with rental or portfolio income
- Retirees managing distributions and Social Security
- Small businesses that need books kept as well as returns filed

How we work
Four things we hold to
We plan, not just prepare
Filing a return records decisions that were already made. The work that changes your tax bill happens before the year closes, so we look at entity structure, the timing of income and expenses, retirement and depreciation elections, and the credits you qualify for but have not been claiming.
We explain it in your language
You should understand why your return looks the way it does. We walk through the result with you before anything is filed, in plain English, and we would rather answer the same question twice than have you sign something you do not follow.
We are reachable outside April
Tax questions do not keep to a season. Buying a property, hiring a first employee, taking a distribution, or receiving a notice are all cheaper to handle before they reach a return than afterwards.
We price up front
You get a starting price before any work begins and confirmation of your exact price before we proceed. No invoice arrives with a number on it you have not already agreed to.

Who you will be working with
Samuel Hatley
Owner & Tax Professional
Samuel Hatley owns and runs Carolina Tax Service. He took on an established practice at 217 West Main Street that had been serving this community for more than twenty years, and he kept the parts that were working while modernizing how the work reaches clients.
He prepares and reviews returns personally, and he takes the view that a client should understand their own return before they sign it. If you call the office with a question, you are speaking to someone who does this work, not to a call center.
A note on credentials
We prepare and electronically file federal and state returns. We are not a certified public accounting firm and we do not represent ourselves as one, and we do not audit financial statements. For work outside what we do, we will tell you plainly and point you toward someone who handles it. You can read more about how we protect your information on our security page.
