Mecklenburg also runs county gross-receipts returns that neighbouring counties do not: a prepared food and beverage tax on meals and drinks, a room occupancy tax, and a short-term vehicle rental tax — each filed monthly with the county, separate from the state sales tax return.
Matthews sits on a sales-tax seam. Mecklenburg went to 8.25% on 1 July 2026 when the county's additional 1% took effect, the highest county rate in North Carolina. Union next door is 6.75% and Stanly, where our office is, is 7%. A Matthews contractor crossing into Stallings or Indian Trail is charging two different rates in the same week.
North Carolina requires an annual business personal property listing with the county, generally during January. Counties set their own dates and extension rules each season, so confirm the current year with your county before you file.
How the monthly work runs
Every plan is the same monthly service. What changes between plans is volume — how many accounts you run and how much passes through them — not what gets done.
